Semen analyses are a group of relatively complicated analyses that require thorough knowledge and training to be performed correct and thereby give reliable results that are useful in the investigation of the man in the infertile couple. The comprehensive knowledge that is required to develop and maintain quality within laboratory andrology can be difficult to supply by creating full time posts in each single laboratory within the health system. Furthermore, it is not practical to centralize all laboratory andrology to a few highly experienced centres, since sample reception must be close to the patient and transport of fresh samples must be minimized. The solution for both laboratory staff and laboratory supervisors can be to secure specialist competence by engaging a consultant on a part time contract. Recently I have supported the development of a new andrology laboratory at the Ninewell Hospital, Dundee, Scotland. I have practical experience from supervising a clinical andrology laboratory, including developing documented procedure, development and accomplishment of staff training, and accreditation. In the capacity of licensed physician and specialist in clinical chemistry I can offer commented lab reports to the referral physician. I do research in collaboration with the Karolinska University Hospital, Huddinge, and the Universities of Birmingham (England) and Dundee (Scotland).
