IN THE LIMELIGHT February 13, 2010: The 5th Edition of the WHO manual now in press The new edition of the WHO manual is now in Press... See CV page, C) Books... Exciting Sperm Chromatin Symposium in Stockholm, May 2009 The Sperm Chromatin Symposium in Stockholm focused on the structure of the human sperm chromatin and the relation of this structure for the protection and vulnerability of the sperm DNA. Presentations covered chromatin structure changes during sperm formation as well as the dynamical changes occuring before and after ejaculation. Furthermore, essential activities in the oocyte related to the sperm specific chromatin structure and possible epigenetic consequences of this structural organization were discussed. Clinical aspects included induction of damages due to drug treatment of cancer as well as possible toxicological influence of substances in the environment. Methods for determination of sperm DNA damage were discussed in relation to the basic understanding of the chromatin structure and availability of DNA for interaction with stains or other techniques to make DNA damages visible. Last, but not the least, clinical data were discussed in relation to semen analysis results and ART outcome, and a summary indicating how real progress can be made towards clinically useful measurements of DNA damage or DNA vulnerability. Two recent publications following the symposium: Barratt mfl Andrology Position Report, Human Reproduction, 2010. Plastic, disposable Neubauer counting chamber A plastic, disposable Neubauer counting chamber was not well suited to use as replacement for glass Neubauer counting chambers. Although it would be good to get rid of all washing of glass chambers and mounting of cover slips, the careful evaluation did not validate the counting chambers for sperm counting.
